Background Checks
How are background checks done in Wisconsin?
Background checks for long guns (rifles, shotguns, lower receivers) are done through NICS (FBI). Background checks for handguns (pistols, revolvers, AR/AK pistols, fire control units) are done through the state of WI.
If you purchase more than one long gun at the same time, the background check is done through NICS. If you purchase a long gun and a handgun at the same time, the background check will be done through the state.
Different states have different procedures, so if you do not live in Wisconsin, this may not apply. Please check on your state laws before purchasing any firearm online.
What do you need to pass a background check?
In general, to pass the check you must provide your address, place of birth, height, weight, sex, birth date, ethnicity, and race and verify that you are:
● The actual buyer of the firearm
● A citizen of the United States
● Verify you are NOT:
● Under indictment for a felony or any crime for which the judge can imprison you for more than a year
● A convicted felon
● A fugitive from justice
● An unlawful drug user
● Mentally defective
● A recipient of a dishonorable discharge from the Military
● The subject of a domestic restraining order
● A convicted domestic abuser
● An illegal alien
How long does the background check take?
It is variable. Sometimes it's 5 minutes, sometimes 5 days. Around 90% of the people that come into our shop receive a response the same day or next day. For handguns, the state of Wisconsin MUST reply within 5 business days one way or the other. There is no mandatory waiting period in Wisconsin.
Note that anyone between the ages of 18-21 who wishes to purchase a long gun should be prepared for results to be delayed 3-14 business days. The additional time period required to receive a response from NICS for persons within this age group is dictated by new governmental policies, and we have no say in the time it takes, nor can we speed it along.
What happens if my background check is declined?
Firearm purchases that are not completed due to a declined background check are subject to a 15% restocking fee on the cost of the firearm. Background check fees are non-refundable. You will not be able to take possession of the firearm, but will be provided with information on how to appeal the decision.
Note: this applies to firearm purchases from the inventory of Wraith Precision in-store. For transfers, please see the policy of the seller.
What types of ID can be used to purchase firearm?
Identification must be a government-issued photo ID that is current and unexpired. Examples include:
● Driver's License (Issued within U.S. including U.S. Territories)
● Non-Driver Photo ID (Issued within U.S. including U.S. Territories)
● U.S. Passport
● U.S. Passport Card
● Foreign Passport
● U.S. Military ID Card
● U.S. Military Dependent's ID Card
● Tribal Card
What if my ID is expired or doesn't have current information?
Maybe you just moved and your address changed, or maybe you just haven't gotten around to getting it renewed... In any case, it's best to get an updated ID card *BEFORE* you want to buy a firearm. Many services can be completed online including renewals, duplicates (for change of address) and more. We WILL accept the temporary license issued by the DMV which is usually printed on a piece of paper.

If you have an old address on your ID, but are able to provide another piece of GOVERNMENT-ISSUED supplemental documentation that DOES show your current address, we will be able to process your request in combination with your ID. Examples could include vehicle registration, W2, a letter from the State of Wisconsin (any department), fishing or hunting license, tax documents, tax bill, CCW license, or voter ID card.
Documents issued by private companies or individuals (rental documents, leases, cable bills, phone bills, credit card bills, bank documents, etc.) may not be used as supplemental identification documents for the purchase or acquisition of a firearm.
Is there a mandatory waiting period in Wisconsin?
No, there is no longer a mandatory waiting period for purchasing guns in Wisconsin.

Will you give me your FFL number or a copy of your license?

For more complicated issues such as diagnosing malfunctions, we will need to take a look at it before providing a quote.
Do I need to make an appointment to drop off a gun for service?
No, you don't. Just bring it in any time during normal business hours!
Can you build me a custom AR?
Indeed we can - it's our specialty!
We generally have manufacturing parts on hand to build AR15, AR10 and AR9 in a variety of popular chamberings. Typically we have stock to build AR15s in 5.56, 223 Wylde, 6.5 Grendel, and 300 AAC, AR10s in .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor and AR Pistols in 9mm. Other chamberings are available, but barrels and BCG's will likely need to be ordered for the build. Most components that are in stock with our suppliers arrive within a week or so.
What brands of components do you use in your custom builds?
We use Aero Precision upper and lower receivers and Ballistic Advantage barrels by default. The rest of the parts used are dependent on your preference and budget. We carry a range of components from basic mil-spec to high end from which to choose. If you prefer other brands, let us know and we can try to acquire them for you.
Do you do barrel threading?
Yes. This is one of our most requested services.
Can you mill out a slide on a pistol for a red dot?
Yes, this is something we do. Generally, you will need to know what kind of optic/red dot you'll be putting on the pistol prior to milling.
Do you do cerakote?
Yes! We offer cerakote services through our local partner, Grage Industries.
Do you do cerakote onsite?
Our cerakote facility is local, just across town, also in Pewaukee, WI
Do you work on older model, antique or curio firearms?
Generally speaking, yes, we do, particularly if it's something simple like a cleaning. We are able to get replacement parts for *some* older model firearms, but not all.
The best thing to do with older firearms than need more than a cleaning is to bring them in. The gunsmith should be able to tell you fairly quickly whether he can help you or not.
How long do I have to come pick up my firearm left for gunsmithing services?
Any firearms, for transfers or gunsmithing, not picked up within 30 days of your being contacted will be charged $1/day per firearm for storage. Firearms not picked up within 90 days will be considered abandoned and will become the property of Wraith Precision.
You are responsible for making sure you can be reached through the contact methods you provided. To not miss us contacting you (by phone or email), please add us to your contacts if you have firearms here.
Do you offer classes or training on gunsmithing topics ?
We are space-challenged for offering classes, however if you are doing a build and need help, Dave, the gunsmith, is often willing to work with people one-on-one after hours, his schedule permitting. Please contact Dave directly to see when he might be able to meet with you at dlp@wraithprecision.net
